Tips to Becoming A Freelance Writer

Here are some real, straight-forward tips to becoming a freelance writer - no frills, no fancy language. Know what you have to do, when to do it and how. Let's face it, writing isn't that difficult for creative people like ourselves. Getting paid as a writer is. No one expects other professionals to work without payment, but when a writer asks for a fair return for his/her work it's incorrectly sometimes seen as an insult to to the art.

A publisher once kept a book I submitted for one year before telling me they wouldn't publish it. As you know, publishers request that no submission sent to them be sent to another publisher at the same time. Working with this 'rule' what are writers meant to be eating for each year it takes for individual publishers to say no?

This intro was written by me. The rest of this article is a guest post by Angelita Williams.

Common Misused Words In English

A tutorial outlining some common misused words in English.
My earlier article about the use of you’re and your garnered a very large number of views. It just goes to show that many people aren’t sure about the differences - or when to use them. Of course, we all make mistakes, but I'm sure it irks you to see writers using these and other homonyms incorrectly. (A homonym is a word that’s spelled or pronounced in the same way as another word, but has a different meaning).

The article (you’re and your) linked above has those two words covered, but let’s look at a few of the other most common misused words in English. Note: these are just short explanations – meant to give you a basic understanding. As you know, there are exceptions in the English language and there’s a lot more to say about the words discussed below.

How To Write About Unfamiliar Subjects

So you got saddled with a writing assignment whose subject matter you know nothing about. It’s completely normal for writers to take on an assignment that involves a topic completely foreign to you - that’s part of the beauty of the job. Rather than shy away from the assignment, seize the opportunity to expand your intellect and to hone your writing skills on something outside your comfort zone.
Of course, that’s not to say you should venture into the great unknown without properly preparing. It can be quite a daunting task to cover anything new, no matter what the material. A highly technical piece about a scientific breakthrough can be just as challenging as a piece on foreign policy in the Middle East. What matters is that you devote yourself to covering the topic as honestly and as competently as you can. In order to do that, you have to dive into the details of your assignment with vigour.

Galdir - A Slave's Tale, by Fred Nath

Galdir - A Slave's Tale, according ti the Yeovil Literary Prize 2011, is a 'highly commended' piece of literature. This masterpiece was written by Fred Nath, prolific novelist, blogger and neurosurgeon.

When Sextus, a barbarian slave escapes Rome with a pocketful of gold and a knife, how could he even have dreamt of what the fates might have in store for him?
A tale of love, brutal battles and conflict, in which a mystical prophecy winds its way through an epic saga of struggle against Rome, and the consequences of resistance by the Frankish people, its Warlord and its witches.
